Lehnert (1998) recommended the following codes of Internet communication, known as netiquette, a contraction of Net and etiquette.

• Avoid replying to everyone if what you have to say is really only relevant to the person who sent the last message.
• Do not reply with a yes, no, or other cryptic comment, which will be totally meaningless in a few hours or days, when the conversation has moved on.
• Make sure you indicate the context of your comment, particularly if it relates to a prior discussion.
• If your topic isn't relevant to the discussion, think twice about whether to send it.
• Avoid humor that may be misunderstood or offend.
• Do not use all capital letters; people will think you are shouting.
