Vowels

Vowels are letters in the alphabet that have a long and short sound.
There are five vowels in the alphabet: a, e, i, o , u, and sometimes y

Long vowels
Short a sounds like the a in cat Long a sounds like the a in cake
Short e sounds like the e in hen Long e sounds like the e in bee
Short i sounds like the i in pig Long i sounds like the i in kite
Short o sounds like the o in dog Long o sounds like the o in boat
Short u sounds like the u in bug Long u sounds like the u in glue

Look for words with short and long vowel sounds.
You might want to refer to you vocabulary list as well.


Sometimes the letter Y is used as a vowel in certain words. It can have the long i sound as in the word fly. It can have the long e sound as in the word happy.
